A Nightmare On Elm Street was the first film in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series of slasher films. It was released in November 1984 by New Line Cinema. The film was directed by Wes Craven and starred Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, and Johnny Depp (in his first motion picture role).

Plot

This debut film featured actress Heather Langenkamp as a teen named Nancy Thompson who lives on Elm Street, located in the fictional city of Springwood, Ohio. It is revealed that, in the past, a serial killer (Krueger when he was still alive) was burned to death by the parents of his child victims. He comes back through the dreams of Springwood's youth, and is able to kill them there from beyond the grave. First he kills Nancy's best friend, Tina Grey, and her boyfreind, Rod Lane, is blamed for the murder. Soon, Rod is brutally murdered and Nancy finally finds out what's happening to her friends. Soon, he kills Nancy's boyfriend Glen Lantz. Nancy brings Krueger out of her dream and finds that he's killed her mother, Marge Thompson, in a very brutal way. Nancy defeats Freddy, but the nightmare's not over yet. Not by a long shot.

Notes

  • According to director Wes Craven, Freddy Kreuger was named after a bully at his high school, and his appearance based on a homeless man who frightened him in his youth.
  • Pancake mix was used for the "melting stairs" effect during Nancy's second dream.
