Howard County is a county located in the state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 6,567. Its county seat is St. Paul6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,491 km² (576 mi²). 1,475 km² (569 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.09% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,567 people, 2,546 households, and 1,797 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (12/mi²). There are 2,782 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.69% White, 0.30% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.32% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,546 households out of which 33.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.00% are married couples living together, 6.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.40% are non-families. 26.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.30% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 17.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 101.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,305, and the median income for a family is $40,259. Males have a median income of $27,270 versus $19,587 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,535. 11.70% of the population and 8.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.30% of those under the age of 18 and 15.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
