New Castle is a city located in New Castle County, Delaware, six miles (10 km) south of Wilmington, situated on the Delaware River, at the head of Delaware Bay. In 1900, 3,380 people lived here; in 1910, 3,351. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,862.

History

New Castle was held first by Swedes who settled here in 1640, then by Dutchmen, then English. William Penn landed here in 1682. It was incorporated first in 1875.

New Castle is located at 39°39'53" North, 75°33'55" West (39.664712, -75.565392)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 km² (3.2 mi²). 7.9 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.79% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,862 people, 2,012 households, and 1,339 families residing in the city. The population density is 615.5/km² (1,594.6/mi²). There are 2,199 housing units at an average density of 278.4/km² (721.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 77.48% White, 20.20% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.84% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 2.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,012 households out of which 26.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 27.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 88.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $52,449, and the median income for a family is $56,368. Males have a median income of $40,153 versus $31,571 for females. The per capita income for the city is $24,052. 5.3% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.8% of those under the age of 18 and 7.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
