Teton County is a county located in the state of Wyoming. As of 2000, the population is 18,251. Its county seat is Jackson6.

History

Teton County was organized in 1921.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 10,934 km² (4,222 mi²). 10,380 km² (4,008 mi²) of it is land and 554 km² (214 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.07% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 18,251 people, 7,688 households, and 4,174 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (5/mi²). There are 10,267 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.59% White, 0.15% Black or African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.93% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 6.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,688 households out of which 25.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.30% are married couples living together, 5.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.70% are non-families. 27.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county the population is spread out with 19.90% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 38.30% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 6.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 114.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 115.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $54,614, and the median income for a family is $63,916. Males have a median income of $34,570 versus $29,132 for females. The per capita income for the county is $38,260. 6.00% of the population and 2.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.70% of those under the age of 18 and 4.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. These figures do not fully represent the economic character of the county, which in recent years the IRS has listed as having the highest average individual income tax returns in the county.
