Ticonderoga is a town located in Essex County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,167.

The Town of Ticonderoga is in the eastern part of the county.

History

The Town of Ticonderoga was formed in 1804 from part of the Town of Crown Point.

Historical Fort Ticonderoga is in this town, east of the community of Ticonderoga.

Geography

The town borders both Lake George and Lake Champlain. The east town line is the border of Vermont.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 228.6 km² (88.3 mi²). 211.8 km² (81.8 mi²) of it is land and 16.8 km² (6.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.36% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,167 people, 2,028 households, and 1,352 families residing in the town. The population density is 24.4/km² (63.2/mi²). There are 2,581 housing units at an average density of 12.2/km² (31.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.08% White, 0.46% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,028 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 28.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $34,160, and the median income for a family is $41,992. Males have a median income of $35,896 versus $21,441 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,418. 15.5% of the population and 10.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.4% of those under the age of 18 and 9.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
