History

UNO was founded in 1956 as the New Orleans branch of Louisiana State University, originally as "Louisiana State University in New Orleans" or "LSUNO", but became more independent and changed the name to "University of New Orleans" in 1974. However, the school remains part of the Louisiana State University System.

Campuses

The University has six main campuses spread throughout the New Orleans Metro Area.

  • UNO Lakefront Campuses
  • Main Campus
Called the "Lakefront" campus, the main university grounds are located on the shores of the Lake Pontchartrain end of Elysian Fields Avenue on the former site of Camp Leroy Johnson.
    • UNO East Campus
The Nat G. Kieffer Lakefront UNO Arena is in a separate piece of land on Franklin Avenue.
    • Research and Technology Park
Located at the former site of Pontchartrain Beach amusement park.
  • UNO Downtown Center
  • UNO Jefferson Center
  • UNO Slidell Campus

Hurricane Katrina

On August 29, 2005, the university was severely damaged due to Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent levee breach on Lake Pontchartrain. As a result, UNO is asking for donations to help rebuild the campus. [1]
