Vermilion Parish is a parish located in the state of Louisiana. The parish seat is Abbeville and as of 2000, the population is 53,807.

Geography

The parish has a total area of 3,984 km² (1,538 mi²). 3,040 km² (1,174 mi²) of it is land and 944 km² (365 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 23.70% water.

Home to a number of Cajun peoples, as of the census2 of 2000, there are 53,807 people, 19,832 households, and 14,457 families residing in the parish. The population density is 18/km2 (46/mi2). There are 22,461 housing units at an average density of 7/km2 (19/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 82.68% White, 14.17% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 1.82% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 19,832 households out of which 37.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.50% are married couples living together, 13.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% are non-families. 23.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the parish the population is spread out with 28.10% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.80 males.

The median income for a household in the parish is $29,500, and the median income for a family is $36,093. Males have a median income of $31,044 versus $18,710 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $14,201. 22.10% of the population and 17.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.00% of those under the age of 18 and 21.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
