Virginia gubernatorial election, 2005
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Virginia gubernatorial election of 2005 is a race for the Governor of Virginia. It will be held on November 8, 2005. Virginia is the only state in the United States to prohibit governors to serve successive terms, and the popular incumbent, Mark R. Warner, cannot run for reelection.
The primary election was held on June 14, 2005. Tim Kaine was unopposed for the Democratic nomination, and Jerry Kilgore easily defeated George Fitch with 82.5% of the vote for the Republican nomination.
The general election itself is expected to be close. Russ Potts the Independent could possibly spoil victory for Jerry Kilgore. Tim Kaine had been at one point 10 points behind Kilgore, but has since retaken the lead by 2% over Kilgore due to a series of gaffes by the Kilgore campaign.
Some of these gaffes included:
- A television commercial launched by Kilgore accusing Kaine of being so against capital punishment that he wouldn't have executed Adolf Hitler or Saddam Hussein.
- A gaffe by Kilgore during a debate in which he refused to give a straight answer on whether he would sign a law banning abortion if Roe v. Wade was over-turned.
- Trying to back out of an October 9, 2005 debate that he previously agreed to with Kaine.
