The Joseph C. Smith Orchestra was a dance band that occasionally injected some Jazz into their arrangements. Their version of W.C. Handy's Yellow Dog Blues which features Harry Raderman on his "Laughing Trombone" is a good example of Smith trying to Jazz it up a bit. The orchestra recorded for Victor, Columbia, and Brunswick between 1917 and 1922 and played at the Plaza Hotel in New York. A sub-set of the orchestra released two records as the Joseph C. Smith's Trio. Smith and his orchestra played a residency in Montreal, Canada at the Mount Royal Hotel in 1923 and he made his final recordings in Montreal in 1925 under the name of Joseph C. Smith and His Mount Royal Orchestra
