None of the musicians in Ladd's Black Aces were Black even though Gennett records advertised them as such, going so far as to show a picture of an African-American band in their ads. In reality the name was a pseudonym for the Original Memphis Five. Jimmy Durante plays piano on the 1921 sides. This is singer Cliff Edwards first record and he does his interesting "Effin", which is what he called his half scat, half kazoo-sounding vocals towards the end of the song Virginia Blues.
