Street Closure Permits Examined

Clarkson to draft new rules to avoid irregularities

By Lyn Reed

After meetings held between Council- member Jackie Clarkson and French Quarter leaders concerning the excesses during the Ferrari event held in November in the French Quarter, it was decided that a set of rules and regulations would be drawn up regarding street closure permits. When FQCP tried to get the 900 block of St. Louis closed for a street dance following the Progressive Dinner, the approval could not be obtained because all residents of the block would not agree to the proposal. It was therefore blatantly unfair that the Ferrari event sponsors obtained a street closure permit without the concurrence of all businesses and residents on the affected blocks. Councilmember Clarkson assured French Quarter leaders that this type of inequity would not occur in the future.
