Harley Schinker was appointed as Chief of Police for the City of Long Beach
on July 01, 2002. Prior to being selected for the position as Chief,
he had been a member of the Chicago Police Department for thirty-three
years, where he served in a wide variety of positions, retiring at the rank
of commander.
Chief Schinker was born in Chicago, Illinois. A 1965 graduate of DeLaSalle High School, and a 1980 graduate of Chicago City-College, where he obtained an Associate of Arts Degree in Law Enforcement. Chief Schinker also holds a Bachelors and Master of Public Administration Degrees from Governors State University, University Park, Illinois. In addition Chief Schinker is a graduate of the Northwestern University, Center for Public Safety, School of Police Staff and Command (1985), and the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety, Executive Development Program (1998), and most recently attended the Southeastern Law Enforcement Development Seminar 2002.
Chief Harley Schinker resides in Ocean Springs, Mississippi with his wife Janice. His son, Brian, is a director of revenue management with United Airlines. Daughter-in-law Michele is a nurse at Loyola Hospital. Daughter, Elizabeth (Hackett) is a paralegal with the firm of Altheimer and Gray. Son-in-law, Michael, is a senior accountant with Equity Properties. His granddaughter, Cassandra resides at home with Elizabeth, and her dog, Rusty.
