Betsy in her Zydeco and Fern in his newly painted Czech 2.

This rather unusual craft has an interesting history.

It was built in 1972 by Phil Allender of Morgantown, WV. The Czech 2 (C-2) canoe was used in the Olympic slalom trials on the Savage River in Maryland.

The canoe was then passed on to Jean who then passed it on to Francis, the current owner.

Francis modified the boat to suit his style of paddling by cutting out a center cockpit and using the original cockpits for stowing gear.

I think the use of a lawn chair for a seat and the easy access to the cooler will give you some idea of the type of paddling Francis does.

To individualize the craft even more Francis is using Jean's homemade paddles. The materials are 1.25" dowel rod and pieces selected from a polyethylene barrel.
