Sotol (Dasylirion wheeleri) has a basal rosette of narrow leaves, up to 1 metre long, with toothed margins. It sends up a flowering stalk which bears thousands of tiny greenish-white flowers. These stalks persist, as shown in the image below, like markers to indicate the positions of the plants.
