Coast laurel oak grows on sandy prairies of the southeast Texas Coastal Bend. It is a small tree or clump-forming shrub that forms extensive mottes. Its small, thick, lustrous dark green leaves are evergreen or almost evergreen and it produces small acorns profusely. It is closely related to the Pineywoods' laurel oak, Q. laurifolia, and could possibly be considered a geographical or climatic species of it.
