Quercus pungens var. pungens
Fagaceae (white oak group)
Sandpaper Oak is found in west Texas, usually on limestone hillsides and dry creek and river banks. It grows to only 15 to 20 feet. The upper surface of the leaves is harsh to the touch, somewhat like sandpaper. It is evergreen, with small, shiny, many-toothed green leaves. Sandpaper Oak closely resembles Vasey Oak, var. vaseyana, but Vasey Oak has a smooth upper leaf surface, only semi-evergreen leaves, and not as many teeth on the leaf margins.
