On a previous trip to Viera Wetlands I caught a fleeting glimpse of a River Otter before it vanished into the water. But this one was staying put and Art, (Betsy' father) and I soon realized it was eating something.

I crept closer and closer and still it did not move. It occasionaly looked up at me and then went back to the business of munching away at a Sea Trout.

Eventually it had enough and slipped in to the water, only to resurface and continue it's meal on the opposite bank. A real treat!

On a trip earlier this week to Lake Proctor Wilderness Area I had the good fortune to come upon two Sandhill Cranes feeding in one of the shallow, woodland ponds. Over the years I have heard the "loud, rattling kar-r-r-o-o-o, with multiple variations" off in the distance but have seldom been lucky enough to see them. I was able to watch this pair for nearly a half hour before I moved on down the trail.

These three shots show the cranes preening and eating as the hopped and flew from mat to mat.

The reddish haze in the forground is 100s of plants of Sundew (Drosera).
