Friday, October the 2nd

Another clear, cool morning with afternoon temps in the low 80s. Calm and clear.

Here is my makeshift desk using a piece of plywood I found in the garage area. I like to have the window open so I have been cocooning in Bruce's down sleeping bag while I work.

At about 3:00, after my usual stint at Farley's and a short nap I took the 22 up to 16th and Bryant. This is the former site of the Seals baseball stadiumwhich was razed to make way for "Potrero Center" shopping plaza. I love how developers decide where the center of a neighborhood or community is going be.

The plazas anchor stores are an Office Depot and a Safeway Grocery Store. I went into the OD looking for mailing envelopes and found the place to be nearly empty. Next, to Safeway for a sour dough baguette, cereal, beer and whole wheat fig bars. When I saw the price of the cheddar cheese - $7/lb, I decided to see if I could get a better deal in the Mission.

Ridin' the 22.

Shopping complete, I crossed the street to the bus stop and joined these folks for the wait. Seeing them made me realize how easy I have it at home where I can hop in the car anytime and drive to the grocery store - or anywhere else. No bus lines where I live.

I got back in short order, the round trip had take only about 40 minutes or less. I stowed the groceries then made myself a cheese sandwich with a nice piece of the crusty baguette. Simple, but tasty. I enjoyed it while sitting in the sun on the fire escape which over looks the back yards of the adjacent houses. Afterwards I decided to head up to the Mission to look for some dinner and cheddar cheese.

The original plan was to meet my buddy Steve from Milpitas at 7:00 for drinks and running around. Steve had to reschedule so I headed out solo.

I got off the 22 at 16th and Mission and headed up Mission in search of my cheap cheese and dinner. I found my cheese at the Duc Loi Super Market (2200 Mission St between 18th & 19th Streets) for $3.49/lb.

I continued up Mission now looking for the Taqueria Cancun which had received high marks from the local rags and the likes of those on Yelp. In particular they were supposed to have a great vegetarian burrito which I planned on trying.

I soon found the place at 2288 at between 18 and 19th streets.. When I walked in at around 6:00 they were doing some business, but it was not packed. I ordered the veggie burrito (4.99) with "everything" - rice, beans, cheese, onions, cilantro, salsa, sour cream and avocado. The latter 3 items came in small portion cups with the chips.

Here are the starters.

I sat myself at a table where I could get a good look at the door and everyone who ordered had to pass by me. I took a few shots of the place and the trendily dressed 20 somethings who came in and out in a steady stream.

The service was pretty speedy and the line never long. A lot of people where getting take-out.

Hmmm... heavy on the rice, wouldn't you say? I had to really poke around to find the cilantro, cheese and onions of which there was very little. There were a few beans - a few. The taste was undistinguished and bland. The salsa cups saved the day, but even so...

Very disappointing after such accolades from the press and the Yelpsters.

Don't think I will be back here again.

I got back to the apartment around 7:15, grabbed my XTi and tripod and headed up to the roof.
This was the result.
