PLANTS OF EL PINACATE BIOSPHERE RESERVE
The plants of this Reserve are similar
to those in other parts of the Sonoran Desert, but the
settings and the conditions in which they grow are
extreme.

Characteristic scene of Sonoran Desert plants against a
backdrop of uplifted lava. The plants here include teddy
bear cholla (silver coloured), saguaro cactus and
paloverde (tree, centre left). Parts of the cinder in the
foreground (e.g. centre left) are coloured pink by growth
of Nama demissum (purple mat) - a
predominant groundcover over most of the cinder-covered
area in April 2001.
