Saturday, October 17th

My last full day in The City. Most of the day was spent getting organized for the flight back home: Online flight check-in for my boarding pass and checked baggage, mailing of books, maps, etc, back home at the PO on Bryant near 16th, having my flight docs printed. I had no printer available so I went around the corner to Post and Parcel located on 18th near Connecticut to get them printed. They would not print from my thumb drive so I had to go back to Farley's, log back on, email docs to them, and then walk back down and wait until they arrived.

I started sorting and packing my carry on and checked baggage stuff. This was made a bit easier by the fact I had used some of my clothes as packing for the books I had shipped back.

Later in the day I decided to head out for some lunch. I walked down to 18th and 3rd to Moshi Moshi.

Tasty, but not very filling.

As I did in 2007, I decided to take my last walk at Land's End.

I did not get going until around 4:00 and by then the busses were pretty jammed. I took the 22 up to Geary Street and picked up the 38 Geary L outbound. Traffic was thick and sluggish on Geary. When I got off the bus at 33rd Avenue, it was 5:00. I walked back to 32nd and took a left down to El Camino de Mar (The Way (Road) of the Sea) to the Eagle's Point Overlook where the trail begins.

Just a few minutes down the Coastal Trail one can see views like this: China Beach, Baker Beach and the Golden Gate Bridge.

China Beach was previously known as James D. Phelan State Beach Park and is still listed on many maps as such.

I spotted this flower stalk just off the trail.

It looked like and orchid to me, but I cannot be sure.

The plants of the California Polypody ( Polypodium californicum) had perked up quite a bit after the 2.5" of rainfall received on October 13th.

There is a spur trail down to Mile Rock Beach and Lands End Point. There were two people fishing at the point. As you will see from the image below, that is a long cast!

I walked the Coastal Trail back to Sutro Heights where it intersects with Point Lobos Street. Had I stayed just a bit longer I would have seen what was apparently a gorgeous sunset. But, my hunger pushed me down Point Lobos to Geary and then down Geary to around 18th Avenue.

By now I had passed up numerous eateries, but it was just late enough (6:45) that most of them looked very busy. When I got to Pho Clement 2 (5423 Geary Blvd - between 18th & 19th Avenues), it was nearly empty. Maybe not a good sign, but I was to hungry to walk much further.

This is the Tai Nam Gau Gan Sach ($6.50) which is rare steak, well done flask brisket, seedon, stripe and of course rice noodle, basil, bean sprouts, bak choi, cilantro, slivered hot green peppers, etc.
If anyone knows what the hell "flask brisket, seedon & stripe" is I would like to hear from them.

For all the ingredients, the soup was rather bland. I fixed that with some soy sauce and red chili sauce.

"Just so's you know what you were eating:
Tai Chin Nam Gau Gan Sach refers to the meat ingredients: eye-round steak, well-done flank, marble brisket, soft tendon, and tripe."

I paid up and walked down to the next bus stop, and then road the 38 down to Fillmore where I picked up the 22 at around 7:25. The bus was nearly full and it dropped or loaded passengers at nearly every stop. I got back to Bruce's around 8:00 PM.

Bruce had started Happy Hour without me, but I was not long in joining him.

We shot the bull for a while and were both in the sack by 10:00.
