Girod's Bistro

As a tribute to the late Nicholas Girod, mayor of New Orleans
from 1812-1815, we, the Proprietors of their Napoleon
House have dedicated the center room of the restaurant
in memory of the same man who offered his private home to
Napoleon Bonaparte while in exile. This European style Bistro,
providing Mediterranean and Southern French cuisine, with
accents of South Louisiana, has all of the Old World charm
our patrons have long enjoyed. In addition to the Bistro,
we have also carefully preserved a time-honored New Orleans
institution.
To understand the building, one must know Girod himself. Girod
was a Philanthropist born in 1747 in French Savoy. He migrated
to Louisiana with his brothers in the late 1770s. As
a commissioned merchant and property owner, Nicholas Girod
prospered. As Mayor of New Orleans during the War of 1812,
he not only assisted Andrew Jackson during his campaign (not
knowing a word of English), but also managed to pull the city
out of its economic troubles. In 1815 he resigned to salvage
his personal finances. During the years before his death,
he was involved in numerous civil duties including the plot
to rescue Napoleon. Girod never married and had no children.
Upon his death on September 1, 1840, he bequeathed his fortune
to several close friends and New Orleans charities.
He also established the Nicholas Girod fund for the relief
of French orphans in the amount of $100,000.00.
In keeping with the unique nature of Girods home, the
music is classical, the atmosphere authentic and the dining
experience is one youll want to repeat.
