The phrase black muslim is a newly-coined term used mostly in the United States to refer to black Americans who adopt some form of the religion of Islam.

The term is used by different people in different ways. Many use this term to describe any Muslim who happens to be black, but Muslims themselves never use such terminology. To a Muslim, one is either a Muslim or not a Muslim. Many use this term to specifically refer to black converts to Islam in the US, and their descendents, especially those who converted to Islam during the 1960s and 1970s. This term is also often used to denote specifically members of Louis Farrakhan's black-separatist movement, The Nation of Islam.
