Nazia and Zoheb
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Nazia Hassan and Zoheb Hassan were a famous singing sensation in the pop scene during the 1980s in South Asia. The duo released their first album Disco Deewane in 1980 which was an instant hit with the title song on top of the charts. The brother/sister pop band released their second album in 1981 titled Boom Boom.It was a sensation in UK as well as South Asia. But their shot to fame was originally due to the famous song ‘’Aap Jaisa Koi Meri Zindagi Mein Aye…’’(If someone like you came into my Life) which Nazia Hassan sang for the Indian Movie Qurbani for Actor/Producer Feroze Khan.
The duo had a great fan following. But they had their share of controversy as well. The two hailing from Pakistan but brought up and groomed in UK had liberal views. The conservative Muslims in Pakistan found them too inappropriately liberal especially after the fact that the duo had once remarked, "had we not been brother and sister we might have ended up marrying each other". This statement sparked protests from the right wing in Pakistan. However, it almost immediately died down after the two denied ever having said it.
After 6 albums, with 4 being huge hits in the 80s, Nazia went on to get married in 1995 and Zoheb went on with his solo career which was short lived.
Nazia Hassan died of Cancer in London in 2000.It is not certain whether she died of leukemia or lung cancer. Her brother Zoheb Hassan help set up a charity foundation named after her to help in creating support systems for children in need as well as providing homes for them. The Foundation also sponsors awards in recognition of individuals who promote greater harmony between cultures the awards will be selected from all fields ranging from music and the arts to science, sport, business, engineering, humanities and charitable work, politics, etc. The Nazia Hassan Foundation seeks to promote fusion between different cultures, traditions and beliefs.
