A square metre (US spelling: square meter) is by definition the area enclosed by a square with sides each 1 metre long. It is the SI unit of area. It is abbreviated m².
A square metre is equal to:

- 0.01 ares

Square kilometer
1 km² is equal to:
- the area of a square measuring 1 kilometer on each side
- 1 000 000 m²
- 100 hectares
- 0.386 102 square miles (statute)
- 247.105 381 acres
Conversely:
- 1 m² = 0.000 001 km²
- 1 hectare = 0.01 km²
- 1 square mile = 2.589 988 km²
- 1 acre = 0.004 047 km²
Note: "km²" means square kilometer and not kilo–square meter. For example, 3 km² is equal to 3 000 000 m² and not to 3 000 m².

Square megametre
Square megametres are not widely used; however, there are a number of "megametre fans" who think that this unit is very convenient for measuring oceans and continents.
1 Mm² is equal to:
- the area of a square measuring 1 megametre on each side
- 1 000 000 000 000 m²
- 100 000 000 hectares
- 1 000 000 km²
