Sugar Bowl
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Sugar Bowl is an annual American college football game traditionally played in New Orleans, Louisiana on New Years' Day. The bowl is one of the original members of the Bowl Championship Series and as such is part of the BCS title game rotation which affects the date the game is played.
On October 1, 2005, CBS Sports reporter and Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Tony Barnhardt first reported that the 2006 Sugar Bowl game will be played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia due the extensive damage to the Louisiana Superdome from Hurricane Katrina. The game will be played as scheduled on Monday, January 2nd (which usually occurs when New Years Day {January 1} falls on a Sunday), as the dome must already accommodate the Peach Bowl on December 30th and the last Atlanta Falcons game (versus the Carolina Panthers) on January 1.
History
Tulane Stadium housed the game from 1935 through 1974; it has been played in the Louisiana Superdome since. Tulane Stadium (demolished in 1981) was also often referred to as "The Sugar Bowl". The Sugar Bowl's corporate title sponsor was USF&G Financial Services from 1987 to 1995 and Nokia cellular telephones of Finland from 1995 to the present. ABC Sports has televised the game since 1969.
Prior to the BCS, the game was traditionally host to the Southeastern Conference champion. In years it does not host the BCS title game and the SEC champion is not involved in the title game, the Sugar Bowl has the option to select that team.
