The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church is a Major Archiepiscopal sui iuris Church with historical links to the Eastern Rite Syrian Catholic Church in communion with the Holy See, which on February 10, 2005 erected its primatial see of Trivandrum into a Major Archeparchy, elevating the Archbishop to Major Archbishop (called Catholicos by Syro-Malankara Catholics). Its adherents are sometimes grouped together as Saint Thomas Christians. Those Syro-Malankara churches which did not come into full communion with Rome on September 20, 1930 remain as the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church or the autocephalous Indian Orthodox Church. Some of these churches have close relations with Malabar Churches.
