History

Chalmette was the location of what is often called The Battle of New Orleans where United States forces under General Andrew Jackson defeated the British in 1815. The battlefield is preserved as a national monument, and a military cemetery is adjacent.

On 2005-08-29 the enormous storm surge pushed by Hurricane Katrina up the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, a little-used commercial channel dug by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1960s, inundated the entire town up to 30 feet in some places. As a result, in a little over 15 minutes Chalmette was almost entirely destroyed with a large loss of life. As of 2005-10-25, most of the bulidings have been found to be unsavable, and the area remains virtually uninhabitable. Despite findings published by the EPA, the toxic chemicals in the water from local oil refineries have been postulated to be an ongoing health hazard by several civilian ecological groups.

Etymology

The community was named after plantation owner I. Martin de Lino de Chalmette. The surname is derived from the french word les chalmettes which is a geographic term for a "small rocky hill" which itself was derived from the pre-celtic word chalm.
