Georgetown is a village located in Brown County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 3,691. It is the county seat of Brown County6. Georgetown was the childhood home of Ulysses S. Grant.

Georgetown is located at 38°52'1" North, 83°54'9" West (38.866926, -83.902590)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²). 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,691 people, 1,565 households, and 996 families residing in the village. The population density is 385.2/km² (997.1/mi²). There are 1,702 housing units at an average density of 177.6/km² (459.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.75% White, 2.00% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 0.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,565 households out of which 33.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.1% are married couples living together, 15.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% are non-families. 32.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the village the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 83.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $29,807, and the median income for a family is $37,371. Males have a median income of $31,897 versus $19,634 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,112. 14.5% of the population and 11.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.2% of those under the age of 18 and 17.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Points of Interest

President Ulysses S. Grant attended grade school in Georgetown. The school house is still in the town, the locals refer to it as Grant's School House. The second most famous person (or maybe the most famous) from Georgetown is also named Grant: Brian Grant the basketball player formerly of Xavier University and now the NBA.
