Aurora is a city located in Dearborn County, Indiana, along the Ohio River. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,965.

Geography

Aurora is located at 39°3'31" North, 84°54'23" West (39.058551, -84.906351)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.6 km² (2.9 mi²). 7.2 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.79% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,965 people, 1,592 households, and 1,022 families residing in the city. The population density is 550.7/km² (1,428.2/mi²). There are 1,716 housing units at an average density of 238.3/km² (618.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.59% White, 0.10% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,592 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.4% are married couples living together, 12.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% are non-families. 29.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,500, and the median income for a family is $39,331. Males have a median income of $32,058 versus $24,671 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,587. 10.4% of the population and 9.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.3% of those under the age of 18 and 12.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
