Kenner is a city located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, on the East Bank of the Mississippi River. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 70,517.

It is a suburb on the western edge of the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan area, and is the location of the city's main airport, Louis Armstrong International Airport.

History

The town, originally called "Kennerville", was founded in 1855, on land that had been a plantation belonging to Minor Kenner.

On July 9, 1982 a Boeing 727 carrying Pan Am flight 759 crashed in Kenner killing all 146 on board and eight on the ground.

Kenner is located at 30°0'35" North, 90°15'2" West (30.009610, -90.250585)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 39.4 km² (15.2 mi²). 39.2 km² (15.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.66% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 70,517 people, 25,652 households, and 18,469 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,798.3/km² (4,659.0/mi²). There are 27,378 housing units at an average density of 698.2/km² (1,808.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 68.12% White, 22.55% African American, 0.40% Native American, 2.84% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 3.80% from other races, and 2.24% from two or more races. 13.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 25,652 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% are married couples living together, 16.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% are non-families. 23.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.23.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $39,946, and the median income for a family is $45,866. Males have a median income of $34,964 versus $24,051 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,615. 13.6% of the population and 11.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.7% of those under the age of 18 and 12.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
