U.S. Highway 400
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
US 400 is an east-west U.S. Highway. Its route number is a "violation" of the usual AASHTO numbering scheme, as there is no US 00.

Termini
As of 2004, the highway's eastern terminus is west of Joplin, Missouri at an intersection with Interstate 44, which it shares with U.S. Highway 166. Its western terminus is in Granada, Colorado at an intersection with US 385.
US 400 and I-66
US 400 was created to run down a corridor for a possible extension of Interstate 66 which only runs from Washington, DC to northern Virginia. A call had been made to extend this interstate to California, but everything west of Wichita, Kansas has been killed due to lack of enthusiasm from the states traversed, expense, and the lack of any other road along that path. US 400 was supposed to be a temporary route until I-66 is built. The eastern terminus of US 400 at Interstate 44 near Joplin, Missouri is where I-66 would leave its proposed multiplex with that interstate to enter Kansas. It will be many years before such an interstate will be built, if at all, and the numbering "66" is unsure due to the proximity of the former U.S. Highway 66, now designated historic.
States traversed
The highway passes through the following states:
Related US routes
- US Highways 412 and 425 are similar violations of the standard numbering scheme.
- Since the western third of the route is multiplexed with US 50, a more logical numbering would be to truncate the route in Dodge City and number the remainder as US 256, which also meets up in Dodge City.
