Of the 50 states:

  • 16 states are abbreviated by their first two letters.
  • 15 state abbreviations are the first and last letter in a state's name.
  • 10 Two-word states are abbreviated by the first letter of each word.
  • The second letter for the remaining 9 states is usually one not found in other states that share a first letter with that state.
