24 December 2012

On this the eve of Christmas I cannot help but wonder if someone, somewhere will receive and unexpected "gift". A murdered son, a maimed father, or maybe witness a mass killing of last minute shoppers or be one of the victims.

It has been said ad nauseum "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." My version is "People with guns kill people". The more people with guns, the more people who will end up dead or wounded. It is pretty simple math.

NRA - Never enough guns

Before the NRA held it's much anticipated press conference last Friday David Fitzsimmons (Fitz), cartoonist for the Arizona Daily Star submitted the above cartoon. How right Fitz was.

The NRA had this to say about all the murdered kids at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said at a news conference in Washington. LaPierre also called on Congress to act immediately “to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school in this nation.”

This predictably simplistic, callous and thoughtless response should have surprised no one. It certainly did not surprise me.

Here in Tucson this statement touched off a fire storm of letters to the editor, most of them in this vein:

December 23, 2012
Ariz. lawmakers should rethink gun laws

No longer is the owner of a handgun required to carry a concealed weapons permit when carrying a handgun that is not in plain sight. The acquiring of this permit formerly required the applicant to submit to a background check, enroll in a one-day class on handguns, shoot the weapon in the presence of a qualified instructor and pay a fee for the permit.
However, in its "infinite wisdom," our state Legislature passed a law in 2010 allowing anyone age 21 and over to carry a concealed weapon without the formerly required permit. MORE...

And, just to make sure anyone who wants to get a gun gets one all you need in Arizona to buy a gun at a gun show is a drivers license. My, how handy is that! And just to make sure you keep the meddling bleeding hearts out of your business you can always buy a counterfeit drivers licence.
Now, no one will know you just but 3 assault weapons and 1000 round of ammo. And a dozen high capacity magazines - just in case!

And not surprisingly here in Arizona local gun worshipers are in lockstep with the NRA:

2 Groups Advocate Arming Teachers
They say those with training should have speedy access

PHOENIX - Two Arizona gun-rights groups said Wednesday that lawmakers should consider letting specially trained teachers and administrators carry guns in public schools to protect students against attacks. MORE...

I would like to tell you this is a new idea put forth by far right, fringe gun nuts. But it is not. As this letter to the editor indicates this has been going on for while.

Keep guns out of schools
Re: the Aug. 29 letter "Guns ease fear, offer protection."

In the words of the letter writer I'm responding to, you have to be "mentally challenged" if you can't grasp that giving teachers firearms to carry onto school campuses is a bad idea. No responsible parent should want his or her child to go to a school where teachers have guns. MORE...

And a more recent letter to the editor clearly points out the ludacracy of arming teachers.

This teacher doesn't want to carry a gun
Re: the Dec. 20 article "2 groups advocate arming teachers."
I am a teacher - and I consistently misplace my keys, glasses, book bag, paper, pens. And you want me to carry a gun? MORE...

Shopping for guns

Here is a good solution!! If teachers are not allowed to carry guns, let the students defend themselves!

'Till next time...
